Definition of Skyshelves
Skyshelves™ (not to be confused with overhead storage racks at major retailers) are by definition any shelves, shelving units or shelving systems that are braced from or anchored to the ceiling or has its primary support source located at an elevated level, or, any shelves that have an appearance of "floating" from a wall or ceiling. The Skyshelves system is a universal shelving system that gives consumers an alternative in suiting all shelving needs and storage issues. And serves to capitalize on unused space adequately and conveniently with practicability and affordability.

               Genesis of the Skyshelf
It was sometime in March of 2001, I was in Minneapolis, in the bedroom of my apartment watching the TV, which was to the left of the bed on the dresser. I either had to twist my neck to the left or lay on my left side, neither of which were comfortable for a very long period of time. As I was getting a kinked neck, I looked up at the ceiling, and thought, "what a great spot for the television set", it would eliminate the chiropractor visit and open up needed space on my dresser. So then I began thinking that I might mount a piece of plywood to the ceiling with some chain then I began putting together in my mind the shelf that you see below. I thought to myself  how convenient it would be to be able to go into a retail outlet or online and purchase a little kit like that, where a person could simply plug 4 arms into the ceiling and connect a shelf to them. After some market research I could not find anything similar so I decided to market the idea myself. It would be beautiful and glorious, bordering on "God sent" and become known as the Skyshelf.

History of Shelving
As many of you may know, books used to be so precious and so rare that they were only allowed to be used if they were permanently chained to their shelves. So it is not so ironic that the evolution of the modern day shelf in part, was due to libraries, and their large inventories of books that needed to be protected and preserved when stored for very long periods of time.

The wall-mounted shelf support system we see most commonly today, consisting of at least two vertical slotted wall mounted support bars and shelf support brackets that slip onto the bar is originally known as the Gartung system. It was patented in 1978 and is today considered an industry standard. The system is easy to mount and very flexible in design, but it does have some problems. It is easily possible to dislodge the shelves from the brackets and/or the brackets from the mounting bar if it is accidentally hit from below. Brushing against it may knock the shelf and contents off, and overloading can cause the system to fail by the twisting of the brackets, meaning valuables and breakables are always in jeopardy, AND,... it's ugly. This system has been and continues to be used primarily as a utilitarian low cost solution.

Also in 1978 California Closets were born. Starting in southern California, C.C. would go on to revolutionize storage solutions and forever changed the way shelving could be perceived. Selling their first franchise business by 1982, launching their first national advertising campaign by 1996, and proving the incredible demand for storage solution, their revenues doubled between 1997 and 2000 alone. C.C. is still around, they have however become somewhat expensive.

I am proud to say that the evolvement of the shelf continues with the creation of Skyshelves. Finally an affordable and practical option to shelving and storage solution without having to bolt heavy looking and unsightly mounting hardware to the ceiling. Good looking, dependable, durable, flexible and versatile, it will become known as the "Stevens System".
